What happens during a normal 40 week Pregnency? What does
the fetus look like? Have a look at
week by week pregnency development.
Week 1 - The is just the start of the 40 week long
incubation period. At this time a woman is starting her last
period. The beginning all starts here. No drinking or
smoking would be wise.

Week 2 - The uterine lining is thickening, ovulation is
about to occur. This is where the sperm will meet up with
the egg and start the process.
Week 3 - Ovulation has come and gone. Implantation will
occur this week as long as the sperm has reached the egg in
time.
Week 4 - The body is starting to realize the changes that
have occurred. A urine Pregnency test would be positive at
this point and the signs in place.
Week 5 - The heart beings to beat and the baby is an embryo
now. By the end of the week it will be 1.5 - 2.5 mm in
length.
Week 6 - The baby is still growing fast and will be 4-6 mm
by the end of the week. The upper and lower limb buds will
appear and the larynx and inner ear start to form.
Week 7 - Hand plates and genital tubercle become present,
but the gender cannot be determined...yet. The nasal pit
form and the baby is 7 - 9 mm long.
Week 8 - The gonads start to develop (male/female), hind
brain is visible, and spontaneous movement occurs. At the
end of the week the baby will be 8 - 11 mm.
Week 9 - The elbows are visible, toes formed, and gonads
have become male/female. Baby is 13 -17 mm or 0.51 - 0.66
inches long and weighs 1 grams.
Week 10 - Baby enters fetal stage or second trimester. Toes
are formed, eyes largely open, and external genitalia
beginning to become apparent. External ears and lips are
formed. The baby will no longer look like a tad-pole now,
weighing in at 4 grams and 1.06 - 1.38 inches long.
Week 11 - Head is about half the size of the body. The iris
and finger nails develop. The baby is 7 grams.
Week 12 - 14 grams and 3.54 inches long, reflexes develop
and the digestive track get ready for life on the outside.
Week 13 - Teeth are in place and ready for the days of
teething. Intestines move into place and the pancreas starts
secreting insulin. The baby is now 1 oz.
Week 14 - The baby is 4.92 inches and can produce urine.
H/she will also practice breathing.
Week 15 - Sucking habits form and the baby will suck a
thumb. Skin is thin and blood vessels can bee seen. Hair
patterns develop as the baby is now 70 grams.
Week 16 - Nails and ears are well formed. Movements more
coordinated and gender can be detected with ultrasound. The
baby is 3 oz and 6.3 inches.
Week 17 - Loud noises can startle baby at this point. The
baby is 5 oz.
Week 18 - 7 oz and 8.1 inches long this week as the bones
continue to harden, and fingerprints develop.
Week 19 - At 8 oz, girls ovaries now contain eggs. Lanugo or
a fine hair covers the baby's body and permanent teeth buds
form.
Week 20 - Sleep patterns can be detected as the baby grows
to 10oz, 9.8 inches.
Week 21 - In the third trimester the baby can still move,
but will change to a head down position later in this
trimester. 13oz.
Week 22 - Eyebrows are visible as the baby weighs in at 15
oz and 10.8 inches long.
Week 23 - Baby is unaffected by Braxton Hicks contractions.
First stool is developing and the baby is 1 lb, 2 oz.
Week 24 - Baby has a chance of survival if born now. Steroid
shots can help develop the lungs if pre-term labor is
detected.
Week 25 - Baby's bones continue to harden and h/she grows to
1 lb, 9 oz.
Week 26 - Baby is aware of light and dark. Noises can be
heard and h/she weighs 1 lb 2 oz and 12.8 inches long.
Week 27 - Baby is still moving and growing at 2 lbs.
Week 28 - Eye lashes developing, boys testes descend. At
13.8 inches and 2 lbs. 4 oz a baby born now has very good
chance at survival.
Week 29 - Movements start to decrease and should be motored
by using fetal kick counts. Baby is 2 lbs 9 oz.
Week 30 - 3 lbs and 14.8 inches long, contractions noticed
by baby now, but h/she is unaffected.
Week 31 - Irises dilate and contract due to light and the
baby weighs 3 lbs. 5 oz.
Week 32 - 15.8 inches, 3 lbs 11 oz. Movements peak as baby
gets ready.
Week 33 - This week the baby is at a 4 lbs and there is even
a less chance of prematurely if born now. Lungs are
preparing for birth.
Week 34 - At 4 lbs 7 oz and 16.8 inches long, hormones from
the placenta start to activate milk in breast.
Week 35 - Organ systems have been present, but now their
getting ready for the life outside the womb.
Week 36 - Baby is dropping and breathing become much better
for mom as the baby weighs in at 5 lbs. 2 oz.
Week 37 - Baby can get hiccups and kicks slow.
Week 38 - Baby can gain up to 1 oz a day now. Get that bag
packed, if not ready.
Week 39 - Some women don't last this long. Baby is ready!
Week 40 - Happy Birthday! Most baby's average 7.5 lbs and 20
inches long at birth.
Enjoy these moments they don't last
long enough.
